forgotten_complex Although it looks as though I just mashed the keyboard with the capslock on, the title of this entry is an acronym for “Yet Another Pre[C]ambrian Resonance Track Preview”. In just twelve days Precambrian Resonance will be released and I will have posted 365 daily sounds on AudioCookbook.org. This piece, titled Forgetten Complex, is a bit of a departure from the earlier examples posted for preview. It was originally exhibited on ACB, and rather than a percussion driven piece Forgotten Complex relies on ambient Rhodes and other processed sound effects to create the lonely atmosphere of an abandoned warehouse.

Microtrack of Recycled Rhodes, Beats and Bass

Lobby Lovingly mixed on cheap ear buds, this micro track consists of a cut up chunk of low frequency Rhodes running through auto pan and a bit of amp modeling, out of key FM synth bass, and frosty beats that were partially programmed using the GMS (Gestural Music Sequencer). It’s not a habit of mine to mix blind (or would that be deaf?), so I hope there aren’t too many nasty surprises when I hear this through proper speakers.

External Sync Feature Added to the GMS

With some expert help from Grant Muller I have successfully added the capability of synchronization with an external MIDI signal to the GMS. This feature opens up vast possibilities for performance and collaboration with the tool. To test the feature I sent external sync from Ableton Live to the GMS, which in turn routed note information back through the IAC drivers into Ableton to drive a VST FM synth. I started by live looping a few phrases from the sequencer including a bass line, mid-range arpeggio, and some heavily delayed FM clav, then put it together with a recycled beat into a two minute micro-track. Everything heard, except the drums, are notes output from the GMS via video stimulus.

Time Correction Overload 2

ACB reader, Matt, suggested I try the time correction technique in the last post in a different order. Previously I had dropped the pitch two octaves and then brought it back up two with the time correction enabled. This time I did the opposite, starting by increasing the pitch then lowering it to its original position. It definitely has a different sound. I think it’s much closer to the original than the previous example, but still an interesting way to manipulate the clip.
