ARTCRANK Poster Show Video with Keston and Westdal

I was just informed by Charles Youel about video documentation for the 2010 ARTCRANK Poster Show featuring the track Fe2O3 by Keston and Westdal (Unearthed Music, 2010). The video does a great job of capturing the vibe of the event and I love the way they worked in our track. Here’s the description posted on vimeo.

“The 4th Annual Artcrank poster show. Its an Art Show for ‘Bike People’. Bikes are the world’s most fun and accessible way to get around. Posters are the world’s most fun and accessible art form. ARTCRANK brings them together. ARTCRANK is a showcase of bicycle-inspired original poster artwork that people can enjoy looking at and afford to take home. ARTCRANK began in Minneapolis in 2007, and has expanded to Denver, St. Louis, Portland, San Francisco and Des Moines. Every ARTCRANK show features posters created by local artists from the host city. STEIM Electronic Music Lab at Japan Society in NYC

I have just been contacted by Steven Salzgeber of the Karpal Group about an upcoming performance of artists from STEIM in New York City at Japan Society on Saturday, May 8, 2009. Unfortunately I’m performing in Minneapolis on that date, so I won’t be able to attend. If you’re anywhere near New York for this show, I highly recommend checking it out. The STEIM performances at the Spark Festival of Electronic Music and Art last year were some of my favorite moments of the festival, especially the set from DJ Sniff. Experimental Music Mondays Part 2

This Monday, March 29, 2010 is the second installment of Experimental Music Mondays curated by John Keston. The line-up this time includes Pawlic (Jesse Pollock) and Terr the Om (Nathan Brende).

Sandwiched between them is Ostracon. This is the name I’m using for the plural version of Ostraka. This instance involves the usual characters, John Keston (aka Ostraka), Graham O’Brien, and the addition of Oliver Grudem who will be interjecting his enigmatic imagery as an input source for the generative musical phrases produced by the GMS.

The venue is the Kitty Cat Klub, 315 14th Avenue SE, Minneapolis, Minnesota. The music starts at 9:00pm.

Experimental Music Mondays Call for Entries

I am curating a series of Experimental Music events hosted by the Kitty Cat Klub in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The first installment is Monday, March 1st, 2010. Subsequent installments are scheduled for the last Monday of every month. For the first show we have three performances.

Ostraka (myself) with Graham O’Brien on drums will be performing using the GMS. Terr the Om (Nathan Brende) will also be performing his distinct breed of electronic music, melding the output from his circuit bent toys with looping and real-time arranging in Ableton Live. Thirdly, Dialsystem consisting of brothers, Graham and Casey O’Brien will likely mesmerize listeners with their ethereal mix of bass, drums, and electronics. Music starts at 9:00pm.

Upcoming Ostraka Performance and New Album

My experimental music project, Ostraka with Graham O’Brien on Drums, is performing on January 27, 2010 at Big V’s in St. Paul, Minnesota. I’ll be on laptop using my custom developed application, the Gestural Music Sequencer (GMS). I’m also using my iPod Touch controlled grain-table glitch generating Max patch for another layer of texture. Chain Fight and Juhyo round out the bill.

It’s also about time I mentioned that I’m in the process of producing a new Ostraka album that features Graham O’Brien on drums. We recorded it recently at Masters Recording, formerly Flyte Tyme of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis fame. The studio was just sold again and from what I understand will be called Madison Media Institute. In any case it was an amazing facility to lay down tracks. Here’s a shot of our setup in Studio A.
