Talk and Learn Alphabet Center

There were dozens of great things to record at the Grandpa-George studio space. One of them was a toy Douglas picked up at thrift shop for less than three dollars called the Talk and Learn Alphabet Center. It’s a kind of cheaper version of a Speak and Spell.

The voice recordings on the unit are great, sometimes hilarious, and have a lovely low bit graininess to them. Me and Derrin Evers took turns pressing the buttons while the recorder was running. Here’s a brief selection of what we collected.

Snow Melting Rapidly into a Storm Drain

Signs of Spring are making themselves heard in Minneapolis. For example, I recorded the sound of snow quickly melting into a storm drain near the Mississippi river in Minneapolis last night. The temperature was approaching fifty degrees Fahrenheit (ten Centigrade) creating a steady stream of water pouring into a grate adjacent to a cobble stone street. The sound was loud enough to capture my attention as I cycled past it, and nearly drowned (no pun intended) out the ambient noise of traffic and a nearby power plant.

Welcoming Applause at the Cedar Cultural Center

This recording captures the welcoming applause we give performers as they walk onto the stage. It was recorded at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota during the ninth annual Spark Festival of Electronic Music and Arts.

Old New York City Subway Cars

I captured the sound a very old looking group of subway cars going by at the Battery Park City, Chambers Street station. They had an aging deep red paint job and looked as though they were full of some sort of cargo as they flew past.

Light Traffic in Battery Park City

I made this recording during a five minute walk to one of the several subway stations in the Battery Park City community of lower Manhattan, New York. On this particular Saturday afternoon traffic was light. There was a great deal of construction going on in the area, but most of it was on hold for the weekend. I think it’s a nice example of quiet, weekend afternoon, city ambiance. The recording is quite long, and although I did plan on editing it down to a shorter segment, after listening to it a few times I decided to leave it as it is, including the part in the middle where a car went by blaring early Herbie Hancock.
