Prophet REV2 Experimental Patch Set

Prophet REV2 AudioCookbook.org Experimental Patch Set

The Prophet REV2 AudioCookbook.org Experimental Patch Set (version 1.0.3) is now available for $29.99 USD. The set includes 128 completely original patches developed on a 16 voice Prophet REV2. All 128 patches have been recorded and can be heard in the SoundCloud playlist above. The bank is comprised mostly of experimental patches and sound effects, but also includes patches manually developed through a conceptual process, and some that were created as conventional sounds to fulfill a specific utility. Please click the image below to purchase the patch bank through PayPal. Once payment is received you will be emailed the patch bank in SysEx format and instructions for installation compressed as a standard .zip file. The .zip file contains four versions of the patch bank that correspond to each of the four available user banks so that you can choose where to load the patches. Lifetime updates to the patch bank are included in the purchase price. Allow 24 hours to receive an email with the patches, but usually it will be much faster. Also, please check your spam as some customers have been finding the patches there. IF you have any questions feel free to email me at keston@audiocookbook.org.

How the Prophet REV2 Experimental Patches Came to Be

Over the last few years I’ve been developing Max for Live devices to manipulate hardware synthesizers. These include the Yamaha TX81Z, PreenFM2, and most recently the Sequential Prophet REV2. I designed these tools to help me uncover new territory hidden within the sonic depths of these instruments. This has led me to create libraries of unique, bizarre, fascinating, and evolving patches. I typically use these techniques, and sounds for musical projects, commissions, and performances. I have been thrilled with the results I’ve been getting with the Prophet REV2, so I decided to package a bank of broadly experimental patches (with a few conventional ones for good measure) to share with the REV2 community.

These patches were created using several different techniques:

1) A custom Max for Live device was used that randomizes and/or slowly degrades patch parameters over time. Once an interesting patch is created this way the patch is edited to make it suitable for performances and productions. Most of the special effects and experimental patches were produced this way.

2) Starting with a initialized patch, hands on experimentation was used until interesting sounds emerged. For example: experiment with self-oscillation using the 4-pole filter. Some of the tonal patches were created with this technique.

3) A conceptual framework was identified to create the patch manually. For example: make a monophonic lead tone that responds to velocity and aftertouch, etc. This is how many of the more conventional patches were developed.

TESTIMONIALS

The AudioCookbook.org Experimental Patch set for the Prophet Rev2 is a collection of experimental, glitch, special effects, and a few conventional patches. All 128 patches are entirely original creations built from the ground up or through custom morphing software developed for the Rev2.

Synthesist John Keston (AudioCookbook) lets us know about a new sound library he’s created for the Sequential Prophet REV2 synthesizer. The Prophet REV2 AudioCookbook.org Experimental Patch Set features 128 original patches and focuses primarily on experimental patches and sound effects, but also includes patches created as conventional sounds to fulfill a specific utility.

Much thanks for your patches John, you know what? To be absolutely honest I literally bought a REV2 because of your bank of presets :D :D That may sound crazy but the fantastic job you did with this beauty convinced me to purchase one, so thank you for that John!

Your patches are mind blowing! Great work! Reason why we got them! Very useful especially for increcendos, intros, ambience and overall understanding of what a REV2 is capable of when a sound engineer, musician or producer goes deep into it. For an alternative rock band like Parkes your cookbook is key to get an idea of how to expand the REV2 into creating our own sounds and experiment further.

This IS an exceptional Prophet Rev2 patch library. I recently bought this! John Keston has been very helpful to me — he updated the patch bank to have destinations for all 4 user banks, in case you want to send it to a different one without messing with a library. The contents were comprehensively advertised upfront, with an elegant and no-waste presentation, and are an honest depiction of what you get… no flimflam here. Truly, a really, really eclectic patch library with some super-creative sounds for the Rev2 that take it expressively into “far beyond conventional analogue hit recreations” (those have their place too, and live in a couple of my other U banks). I really like the creative approach he took, and how he created demo examples for ALL 128 PATCHES WOW… I have journeyed into what this jungle of playful experiments has brought us. While there’s no overall singular “theme”, as pointed out, there are both highly tonal and melodic patches with sweetness in their soul, and noisy glitchy FX from some harsh alien realm. Some patches are evidently bastard offspring of those two realms, and I mean that in the best possible way. These categories aren’t sorted into opposite numbered sides of the bank, so as I turned the program knob for the first time and auditioned, I was definitely surprised by what’s next. Many of the patches make fine use of aftertouch and modwheel, which for me is a must for adding dynamics and other timbre shading. (In this philosophy, I’ve learned from Vangelis, Wendy Carlos, Jan Hammer, and other luminaries.) Some of the patch names even call these features out and encourage hands-on controller action. So be sure to press down and modulate! There are more than a few where I wondered, “Wow, how did John do THAT!? I’ve never heard a sound like that come outta a Rev2 before”. And so it stands, with his curated approach to patch degradation, he’s given us a bounty that is truly a highlight of ALL the Rev2 banks out there (and I’d probably know, I’ve played and bought most of them). Each truly has a story behind it… deeper into the machine we go!
